The Olympics are in full swing and team USA is holding its own. We won the games first gold medal and at press time have 4 total medals trailing only Norway who has 7. It’s amazing how we all cheer for these skating, luging, skiing, snowboarding people for two weeks every four years and have no idea who they are the other times. Here’s a cool fact … there are three members of the USA Team who have the last name of Gold. Snowboarders Taylor and Arielle share the last name with figure skater Gracie. No athlete has ever won a gold medal with that last name … that could change this year!
It must be nice to be super rich! Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla donated 18-million shares of Facebook stock (worth more than $970-million) to a Silicon Valley nonprofit group. The donation made them the top “givers” of 2013. They were followed by Texan George Mitchell ($750-million), Nike chairman Phillip Knight ($500-million), former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ($452-million) and hedge fund founder John Arnold ($296-million).
In Australia a famous name won a golf tournament. Cheyenne Woods won the Australian Ladies Masters for her first major tour victory. Yes, she is the 23-year-old niece of PGA superstar Tiger Woods! She turned professional in 2012 after an All-America career at Wake Forest University. Look for her to play in a few USA tournaments this year.
The NFL will produce 14 Thursday might games next season and eight of them will be on CBS. In a bidding war, CBS beat out NBC, ABC, FOX and Turner for the rights to show the prime time games. The remaining six games will be shown on the NFL Network who will also simulcast the eight CBS contests. There are also two Saturday games in the deal but no decision has been made who will broadcast those CBS or the NFL Network.
Last but not least … To ensure a healthy population, a Copenhagen zoo killed a healthy two-year-old giraffe and fed him to the zoo’s lions and big cats. The zoo decided to put down the giraffe (who was in good health) because his genes were well-represented among the captive giraffe population in European zoos. Animal Rights Groups went crazy but the zoo insists it needed to be done to keep the giraffe population fresh and healthy … Jay Leno hosted his last Tonight Show last Thursday evening but was on the road doing stand-up comedy the next night! Leno did a show in Sarasota Friday night, Fort Myers Saturday and Clearwater, FL Sunday evening. The 63-year-old was funny and even after a 22 year stint on television was sharp as ever … Have a great week everybody!
